Florida Memorial University is actively monitoring the weather.
Tropical Storm Idalia is forecast to become a hurricane later this evening.
South Florida is not in the cone of concern… currently, no watches or warnings are issued for Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to rapidly intensify due to hot water temps in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend area maybe near Cedar Key as a possible dangerous Category 3.
This means winds will top 111 mph, and there will be life threatening storm surge.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the west coast of Florida, extending from the eastern part of the Panhandle and encompassing Tampa Bay.
According to the National Hurricane Center, parts of South Florida will experience heavy rains and wind gusts due to the deep tropical moisture on the east side of this storm starting later tonight.
Please exercise caution when traveling to and from campus.
