Tropical Storm Ian – Update 2

Sunday, Sept. 25, 4:17 p.m. 

The Florida Memorial University’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor Tropical Storm Ian. According to the ​latest update from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Ian is forecast to intensify rapidly to hurricane strength later today and tonight over the NW Caribbean Sea. Ian is expected to be a major hurricane Monday night and Tuesday as it passes over far western Cuba, then move north into the SE Gulf of Mexico as a major hurricane Tuesday night and Wednesday as it approaches Florida.

Potential Impact for Miami-Dade County:  An estimated 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected, with a local maxima of up to 6 inches of rain through Wednesday morning. Flash and urban flooding is possible with rainfall through midweek.

At this time all classes, services, and events are operating on a regular schedule. Faculty, staff, and students are advised to check their emails and phone notifications for any updates. Please know that prescheduled school closures in Miami-Dade and Broward are NOT due to Tropical Storm Ian.

The ​Emergency Management Team will continue to monitor and assess the situation and provide timely communication of any impact to FMU’s operations or activities. The latest information and updates will be shared through the WENS emergency alert notification and posted on the University’s website and social media platforms.
