COVID-19 Academic Update

Date:               April 10, 2020

To:                  FMU Students

From:             Adrienne T. Cooper, Provost

Re:                  COVID-19 Academic Update

The faculty of Florida Memorial University recognize that these are challenging and extraordinary times, which require flexibility and understanding. You are completing your spring semester while simultaneously dealing with a situation we have not seen in any of our lifetimes.  I could not be prouder of the way that you, the faculty, and the entire University community have risen to the challenge and remained engaged.

Change in Grading for Spring 2020 Semester

In light of these circumstances, the faculty have elected to allow students the option of changing their course enrollment to pass/unsatisfactory (P/U) grading for the Spring 2020 semester.  This change does not include sub term courses for which the grading period has passed.

Faculty will continue with courses as normal and will continue to assign a letter grade to students for all courses.  Students who wish to elect the P/U option for a given course must opt-in for that course.  The choice to opt-in is on a per course basis. The option period will be between April 20 and May 2, 2020. Any student who does not opt-in for a given course will receive a letter grade in that course. Prior to April 20, students will receive a communication with instructions on how to opt-in. There is no need to submit any requests at this time. All transcripts will have a notation that students were allowed a one-time exemption due to the global pandemic.

Impact and Meaning

Please know that this was not a decision taken lightly by the faculty, and you should make your decision with the same level of seriousness and thought process. The primary benefit of the P/U option is that the courses taken under this option will not count toward the student’s grade point average (GPA), either negatively or positively.  It is important to know that only courses passed will count toward graduation. Electing the P/U option does not change the requirements of the course nor will it change the requirements for graduate school or other program admissions. You are encouraged to discuss your options with your instructor, advisor, and others with whom you normally consult for registration before making your selection.

Thank you again for your patience, grace, and understanding as we have navigated these uncharted waters. Please continue to stay safe and follow the guidelines of health officials. For more information about the university’s response please visit
