Florida Memorial University loses to St. Thomas University

Florida Memorial (2-4, 0-2) fell in the Battle of Miami Gardens by the score of 38-7 against St. Thomas at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium in Sun Conference play.

FMU battled early on and kept St. Thomas out of the end zone for most of the first quarter, but the Bobcats got on the board with two short touchdown runs from running back Rontavious Moore to close out the quarter.

As a team, the Lions generated 209 total yards on offense, struggling to move the ball against a stingy Bobcats defense that allowed only 27 yards rushing. However, the Lions had their best drive late in the second quarter when quarterback Antoine Williams connected with Nura Sales on a 13-yard touchdown pass just seconds before halftime, capping a 13 play, 68 yard drive, bringing the score to 21-7 at the break.

However, in the second half, St. Thomas scored 17 unanswered points and kept the Lions offense out of the end zone.

FMU quarterback Williams completed 18-of-36 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Lions running back George Young rushed for 23 yards on the night. FMU wideout Christian Edgerson led the Lions as he hauled in four catches for 68 yards. Teammate Keon Brown added three catches for 23 yards.

On the defensive end, Amari Taylor stayed busy all evening, producing a team-high 12 tackles while fellow Lion Christian Mable added nine in the loss. Philman Roundtree was a dominant force, fighting his way through the St. Thomas offensive line multiple times, generating the Lions’ only sack of the night. He also finished with 3.5 tackles for loss along with eight total tackles.

The Lions return to the gridiron on Saturday, October 22 as they travel to Babson Park to face Webber International in Sun Conference play.

Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
