Big Cat Classic

The Lions and Tigers will battle it out on the gridiron on Saturday, August 27, when Florida Memorial University hosts in-state HBCU rival Edward Waters University in the second football meeting of the “Big Cat Classic.”

These big cats will go head-to-head in South Florida at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, 3000 NW 199th Street in Miami Gardens, kickoff is at 3 p.m. The matchup between the schools will no doubt be an exciting time for the players, coaches, and the fans on both sides of the field, but the “Big Cat Classic” is more than football, it’s history.

Founded in 1866, Edward Waters University is the oldest Historic Black University in Florida and is in Jacksonville.

Florida Memorial University, known then as the Florida Baptist Institute, was founded in 1879 in Live Oak, but later relocated to Jacksonville in 1892 following racial tensions. FMU, then became Florida Normal and Industrial Institute and moved to St. Augustine in 1918, and due to racial unrest during the 1960s, Florida Memorial relocated to its current campus in Miami in 1968.

After years of perseverance by both universities who were once in the same city, we’re now able to enjoy the collegiate rivalry between these two institutions.

We invite you to join us!
