Florida Memorial announces the hiring of Dwayne I. Miller as head coach for the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field programs.

Miller has more than 25 years of experience in track and field coaching at every level, from club track to the professional/Olympic level.

“This is an amazing opportunity and blessing for me,” said Miller. “I am honored to become the new head track and field coach for Florida Memorial University. First, I would like to thank (Director of Athletics) Jason Horn and (Deputy Athletics Director) Kevin Nesfield as well as the entire FMU athletics administration searching committee for believing in me and allowing me to continue to build on this strong foundation. I look forward to working with the entire staff, administration and track and field student-athletes. Trust the process to success.”

Miller most recently coached for Team Malaysia as the national team head coach from 2019-2022, where he earned the Asian University Games Gold medal in the 800-meter run, along with the Southeast Asian Games Bronze medal in the 800-meter run.

In addition, he earned the Southeast Asian Games Silver medal in the 4×100 relay, a national record.

Throughout Miller’s career, he’s displayed a true passion for his track and field athletes.

“I enjoy working with athletes and pointing them in the right direction on the track and in life,” Miller explained. “I’m excited to get the ball rolling and get this team on track. We will get some Olympians, national champions, and trophies to add to our trophy case.”

Prior to his time with Team Malaysia, Miller coached for Team Qatar as the national head coach from 2015-2018, where he won the Arab Championship Bronze medal in the 100-meter run in 2017, and the Asian Championship Gold medal in the 4x400m relay in 2015.

He also coached for Team Saudi Arabia as the national head coach from 2013-15, earning a gold medal in the 4×400 meter relay, a silver medal in the 200-meter run, and a Bronze medal in the 4×400 relay.

“I loved it, I was in Qatar for a few years and before that I spent time in Saudi Arabia, so I speak a little Arabic,” Miller stated.

Miller coached for Norfolk State University from 2010-2013 as the assistant track coach. During his time as assistant track coach, the program was named MEAC champions in 2011 and 2012. The program was also named NCAA Division I finalists in men’s 200-meter champion in 2012. In 2011 the program was named NCAA D1 national qualifiers in the men’s 400-meter, women’s 400-meter, men’s long jump, men’s triple jump, men’s 110 hurdles, women’s 100-meter, and women’s long-jump. Miller coached for Hampton University from 2000-2003 as the assistant track coach, where they won MEAC championship from 2000-2003.

“It’s all about development,” Miller explained. “If you stick to the process, all your dreams can come true.”

In 2008, Miller won the USATF Nike Track Coach of the Year award in addition to the Order of IKKOS Award in Beijing, China.

In 2004, he was named USOC Developmental Coach of the Year. Miller also coached at the high school level, coaching for Maury High School from 1996-1999 as the head track coach.

Miller attended Norfolk State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications.

He also earned his USATF Level I Coach Certification and competed as a professional athlete for eight years in the 100-meter and long jump.

Miller also has more 15 years of professional broadcasting experience.
