Degree Program Mission Statement

The professional education program at Florida Memorial University is designed to uphold and carry out the mission of the University to provide effective academic programs that lead to life-long learning and leadership through service. Program Description:

The Master of Science Degree in Reading is an initial certification program, and is designed to meet the needs of individuals from three different career paths. Track I which requires 36 credits, is designed for candidates with certification in education and ESOL endorsement by the Florida State Board of Education. Track II which requires 42 credits, is designed for candidates with only certification in education, and requires ESOL endorsement. Track III which requires 48 credits is designed for candidates with an undergraduate or graduate degree in an area other than education, and/or who are not certified to teach. In addition to the course work for both career paths, candidates in the program have the option of completing either a comprehensive exam or a thesis at the end of their course work. The Thesis (ESE 599) requires a minimum of 3 credit hours to graduate. If the thesis is not completed and successfully defended, candidates can register for additional credit hours by taking ESE 599 for 1 to 3 credit hours until the process is completed.

Reading is a critical shortage area in the state of Florida which means more job security.

Our Program:

  • Is state-approved (which is a requirement for licensure in some states).
  • Is fast-paced and designed for full-time working teachers.
  • Consists of 12 research-based courses plus field experience.
  • Can be completed in a one year plus 8 weeks.
  • Accepts the TEACH Grant – available for those who qualify (enquire at Financial Office for details)

Courses (taught by full-time Reading faculty) are offered as follows:

Fall – 4 courses

Spring – 4 courses

Summer – 2 courses

Fall – 2 courses

Some classes are delivered in the “Hybrid” Format:

  • 49% of course work are managed online through Blackboard
  • Regular class sessions are held once a week ( 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm (Tuesdays or Thursdays)

Culminating Activities:

  • Presentation of fully executed action research to campus community/local conference
  • Comprehensive examination or thesis

Admission Requirements

  1. Two-Page Completed Application Form
  2. Three Letters of Recommendation
  3. One-page essay
  4. Official Transcript(s) from all previously attended universities
  5. Five (5) year Teaching Certificate or Passing Score on General Knowledge Test
  6. $50 Non-refundable Application Fee
  7. An intake interview with program coordinator
  8. Graduate Record Exams (GRE) score

Graduation Requirements

  • Successful completion of the required semester-hours
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • A passing score on the comprehensive exam or successful completion and defense of thesis
  • A passing score on the Reading Subject Area Test (Florida Teacher Certification Examination)
