Earn Your Masters of Science Degree In Exceptional Student Education While You Teach

Program Description:

The Master of Science Degree in Exceptional Student Education is designed to meet the needs of candidates who want to advance their current teaching certificate. The Teacher Advancement path, which requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, is designed for candidates with an undergraduate degree in Exceptional Student Education or related area; however candidates who are interested in becoming ESOL endorsed will need to take an additional 6 credit hours. In addition to the course work for the program, candidate will have the option of completing either a comprehensive exam or a thesis at the end of their course work. The Thesis (ESE 599) requires a minimum of 3 credit hours to graduate. If the thesis is not completed and successfully defended, candidates can register for additional credit hours by taking ESE 599 for 1 to 3 credit hours until the process is completed.

Our Program:

  • Is fast-paced and designed for full-time working teachers.
  • Consists of 10 research-based courses with field experience embedded.
  • Can be completed in one year ( three semesters)
  • Accepts the TEACH Grant – available for those who qualify (enquire at Financial
    Office for details)

Courses (Taught by Full-Time ESE Faculty) Offered as follows:
Fall- 4 courses

Spring – 4 courses

Summer – 2 courses


5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

(Two days a week)

Culminating Activities:

  • Presentation of fully executed action research to campus community/local conference.
  • Comprehensive examination or thesis.

Admission Requirements

  1. Two-Page Completed Application Form
  2. Three Letters of Recommendation
  3. One-page essay
  4. Official Transcript(s) from all previously attended universities
  5. Five (5) year Teaching Certificate or Passing Score on General Knowledge Test
  6. $50 Non-refundable Application Fee
  7. An intake interview with program coordinator.

Graduation Requirements

  • Successful completion of the required semester-hours
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • A Passing score on the comprehensive exam or successful completion and defense of thesis
  • Graduate Record Exams (GRE) score
