Community Initiatives

The School of Education partners with the “Barbershop Speaks Program”!
This initiative places books on bookshelves in local barbershops. We know reading is the foundation of education. The School of Education provides parent workshops provided by highly trained faculty in Reading during these events. Education majors read to the children in the barbershop. These events are held twice per semester. If you would like to attend, please reach out to the School of Education to inquire about specific dates.

The School of Education offers Professional Development Seminars in the areas of: Literacy, Exceptional Student Education, and Environmental Education. These seminars are scheduled throughout the year.

  1. Literacy
This institute will provide teachers with an understanding of how learning principles can be utilized to increase student academic achievement. Through the use of research-based strategies and learning frameworks, teachers will learn how to develop content lessons which incorporate these principles. This workshop will provide research-based best practices which will help students learn specific strategies that will support their literacy learning through explicit strategy applications. Through modeling and process conferences, teachers transfer this knowledge of learning principles and strategic learning to their students. The ultimate goal of the institute is to empower educators to help students learn independently and more effectively.
  2. Exceptional Student Education
The purpose of this Exceptional Student Education Summer Teacher Institute is to provide Special Education and General Education Educators with the pedagogy, practice, and instructional resources to craft lessons for inclusive classrooms to ensure that the needs of students with disabilities are considered, valued, respected, understood, and heard to ultimately increase academic performance.
  3. Environmental Education
Environmental Education builds the knowledge and skills required to address multifaceted environmental issues, as well as take action to keep our natural world healthy, our economies productive, and communities vibrant. This institute will focus on Project WET, Project WILD, Project Learning Tree, and the Everglades Literacy Program. These workshops are facilitated by Trainers from the mentioned foundations and hosted on the campus of Florida Memorial University.
