The School of Education’s Intensive English Language Acquisition Center has been established to uphold the idea of transforming understanding through realistic approaches to English language acquisition. At the Center, students not only acquire phenomenal English language skills, but they also have the extraordinary opportunity to experience American culture at its best in a state known for sand sun, and fun. Our Miami Gardens, Florida campus marks the quintessential beauty of our state. At Florida Memorial University our motto is “A Promise…A Future”. As such, we are a culturally diverse institution that thrives on transforming lives and helping to create a sound future for people of all races, ethnicities, countries, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Here at FMU, we strive to ensure that you not only meet the language acquisition goals that you have set for yourself, but that you go beyond by achieving success in our university level academic offerings that follow as a result of having completed our intensive English program.
The Center offers four 8-week intensive English language sessions throughout the year, with sessions starting in August, October, January, and March. There is a 6-week summer session staring in June. Students enrolled in these courses receive 20 hours of class instruction per week with at least one hour of laboratory work per week.
Students beginning the program at a basic (low beginning) level are required to take 6 levels of intensive English. Each level comprises a total of 168 hours of instruction and lab work. Successful completion of all 6 levels allows students to matriculate into Florida Memorial University’s (FMU’s) academic programs. Any student opting to receive early admissions into FMU’s academic programs (prior to completion of the 6 levels) must complete an in-house assessment before receiving full admissions. The English intensive program is a non-credit and partnership with the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Studies.

The Center offers two flexible options for taking intensive English language courses.
Students can opt to take classes on the physical campus of Florida Memorial University, where they have an opportunity to immerse themselves fully into the language by working face to face with a well-trained American English as a second language instructor.
All courses range from basic to advanced levels, with each delivering high-interest, interactive practice in the target language. By incorporating the culture, customs, and traditions of the city and state of Florida whether it be a trip to the beach, the shopping mall, a restaurant, etc., students gain a realistic understanding of how to properly use the language in real life experiences. Our learner-centered approach of limiting our classroom sizes to no more than 5-12 students, ensures that students increase their chances of learning to speak English more naturally and fluently.
OPTION II: ONLINE
For students who cannot travel to the US or those who prefer to take classes in the comfort of their homes, we offer the option of taking intensive English Language courses through our online platform. This option allows students to receive instructions from a well-trained American English as a second language instructor in a safe, structured, intensive environment where students gain proficiency through an integrated, online, language learning system.
Courses range from basic to advanced levels, with group project that allow students to undergo a high level of student-teacher and student to student interaction. With each lesson being tied to an online checkpoint which assesses the student’s level of understanding, students can gage their progress more readily. Through classroom lectures from the instructor, audio and video-scripts/activities, students are able to hear and view the language in realistic situations; ultimately assisting students with gaining increased English language proficiency.
