Verification means certain information on your FAFSA application needs to be checked for accuracy. The U.S. Department of Education selects roughly 30% of all FAFSA applications for verification every year. Selection is often random, but sometimes a change to your FAFSA or an error will trigger selection. If you are selected for this review process, Florida Memorial University will tell you what additional documents you will need to submit. Please refer to your LION AID account, click on the “Communications” tab to see these required documents.

The U.S. Department of Education has instituted a policy that Prior-Prior Year (PPY) Federal Income Tax information be used for the upcoming academic year. This means that you will use the same tax return information for 2 years, see chart below:

By using earlier income data, families will have their completed tax information available by the time they are ready to apply for financial aid. This will make it easier to fill in application forms and increase the likelihood that families will be able to import their income directly from the IRS using the online Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).

NOTE: A financial aid award will not be provided until verification items are submitted and verified.
