Judicial Affairs Committee Student Board


Would you like to be a part of the Florida Memorial University Judicial Affairs Committee Student Board? The Student Conduct Board is a premier leadership opportunity for students interested in gaining experience in the student conduct process. The Division of Student Affairs invites students from all classifications to serve on the 2015-2016 Student Conduct Board. According to the Student Code of Conduct, board members are “person(s) authorized by the University to determine whether a student has violated the Student Code of Conduct and may recommend sanctions that may be imposed to the Dean of Students or University designee.”

What does the Conduct Board do?

The primary responsibility of the Judicial Affairs Committee (JAC) Student Board is to hear cases brought against students accused of violating the Florida Memorial University’s Code of Conduct. In a hearing, a panel of faculty/staff and students consider information and witness statements presented and determine if the student is responsible for the violation. If the student is found responsible for the alleged violation, the JAC will make a recommendation to the Dean of Students.

What does it mean to be a part of the Student Conduct Board?

Becoming a board member means you will be called upon periodically to hear minor and/or major student conduct cases. We are looking for students who can be analytical, objective and responsible. A Board member must be able to work cooperatively in a group, articulating his or her own point of view while considering the opinions of others. Members of the Conduct Board are expected to maintain strict confidentiality and to uphold the ethical standards of the University community, both personally and in their capacity as Board/Committee Members.

Membership Criteria Expectations:

  • Attend mandatory training sessions
  • Become knowledgeable about all aspects of the FMU Student Code of Conduct
  • Awareness and understanding of the student conduct review process
  • Act as an effective and cooperative group member and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Commitment to hearing participation (approx. 1-2 hours, 1-3 times a semester). Hearings are scheduled on a case by case basis, Monday through Friday. Board members are assigned to cases depending on their availability, so scheduling is flexible.
  • Maintain at least a 2.7 GPA and full-time status
  • Must be in good academic standing and have no student conduct history with the university

Applicants will be contacted by a staff member in the Office of Student Conduct to complete an interview. Training will be offered to select Board/ Committee Members.

Board/ Committee Membership requires a student to be available to participate in hearings, which take place on weekdays (as needed). A student does not need to be available every day, but be able to be present on their designated weekday(s) to serve, if called upon.
