Re: COVID-19 Update V

As we continue to address the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida Memorial University (FMU) keeps the well-being of our students, faculty and staff at the forefront of our planning. There are no reported cases of COVID-19 on campus. We continue to monitor the guidance from the World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control, Florida Department of Health and local government officials and are taking significant efforts to mitigate the potential for adverse effects. The University remains open and we will adjust operations as this situation evolves. We thank the University community for your patience as we work through this evolving and challenging issue.

Florida Memorial University continues to follow the guidance of the CDC to limit gatherings and practice social distancing. As a result, all scheduled events have been cancelled. Student programming in the residence halls will continue in small groups.

FMU will still serve as a voting precinct for the primary elections on March 17, 2020.

Academic Instruction
Classes are suspended from March 16 through March 18 to provide time for faculty to convert their courses to a remote instruction format. Virtual instruction will begin on Thursday, March 19, 2020, and students are expected to log in to their courses in Blackboard on this day. Please note that instructors may elect to hold classes virtually in real-time at the regularly scheduled class time. Students should be prepared ahead of Thursday to ensure you are able to log in to the courses and actively engage in your courses. Virtual learning will continue through April 4, 2020, at which time we will assess whether to resume in person instruction on campus. Please be aware that instruction will continue, and students will be held responsible for completing the requirements for each of their courses during the virtual learning period. The University will not be able to provide a rebate or refund for any of the tuition or fees accrued during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Residence Hall
Our residential halls remain open to serve our students. However, you also have the option to leave campus to join family or loved ones. As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic, the current date for students to return to campus is Sunday, April 5, 2020. Depending on the latest recommendations, this date may change. Therefore, please continue to monitor your FMU email for updates.

Thompson Catering
Thompson Hospitality Services will continue to provide Marketplace Dining Services for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hours of operation are from Monday thru Friday 7:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. To adhere to health authority guidance regarding social distancing, the Lion’s Den and the Wellness Café/Lion’s Corner locations are closed until further notice. In an effort to adhere to strict hygiene and food safety practice, Thompson Hospitality Services has put in place the following practices:

  • Minimizing people (guests and workers) in dining rooms at any given time
  • Adding additional hand sanitizer stations for consumer use in dining rooms
  • Replacing all self-service stations and now meals are served by staff
  • Implementing disposable plates, cups, and utensils at the dining hall
  • Reducing the number of menu options in order to reduce the number of staff needed to prepare meals; thereby reducing the number of workers on site.

Pre-registration began today for Summer 2020 and Fall 2020. We encourage students to contact their advisor and complete their registration as soon as possible.

International Students
International Students who choose to leave the campus must visit the Office of Undergraduate Admissions so that staff may verify the time frame of your Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (I-20) form. All international students must maintain their F or M student status to be eligible to study in the United States. Failure to have updated documentation may impact your re-entry in to the country. You may contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by calling (305) 626-3758.

Florida Memorial Athletics has canceled all sports for the remainder of the academic year. In addition, all organized athletic non-competition activities have been suspended until further notice. For more information, visit

As Commencement rapidly approaches, we are evaluating alternative options for this important ceremony. Within the next couple of weeks, we will provide a more definitive update.

Phishing Attempts
Please be aware of phishing attempts to sell false protection, spread false information or to gain access to our systems as we conduct more business online. Be mindful and verify before clicking on links or responding to unusual requests.
