Keiser topples Florida Memorial 48-7 in conference opener https://www.fmuniv.edu/keiser-topples-florida-memorial-48-7-in-conference-opener/ Wed, 05 Oct 2022 16:20:28 +0000 https://www.fmuniv.edu/?p=10203 Florida Memorial (2-3, 0-1) scored its only points in the second quarter in a 48-7 loss to Keiser (RV) at the Keiser Football Field in the conference opener.

Early in the contest, a number of miscues and penalties allowed the Seahawks to jump out to a 27-0 lead before FMU finally got on the board. Late in the second quarter, quarterback Antoine Williams connected with Tahjaiun McKay on a 15-yard touchdown just seconds before halftime.

On the defensive end, linebacker Joshua Mimms led the Lions with 10 tackles while fellow Lion Terry Smith added nine in the loss.

Overall, Keiser’s big-play ability got the best of the Florida Memorial defense, putting up over 500 yards of total offense. In a perfect storm, the Lions offense could not generate first downs on the stingy Seahawks (2-3, 1-0) defense, going 3-of-13 on third down conversions.

Williams finished the day completing 16-of-35 passes for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception while Young gained a season-low 14 yards on the ground. FMU wideout Keon Brown finished with a team-high four catches for 57 yards, but dropped a sure touchdown midway through the second half. Fellow wideout McKay finished with three catches for 51 yards.

FMU returns to the gridiron on Saturday, October 15 as they host St. Thomas in the Battle of Miami Gardens. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Betty T. Ferguson Stadium. Next Saturday’s originally scheduled conference game against Warner has been canceled due to damage caused by Hurricane Ian.
