Archives

The Archives of Florida Memorial University Library serves as the repository of records, documents, papers, artifacts and material of permanent historical value to the history of the University. University publications, pictures, clippings, catalogs, yearbooks, commencement and baccalaureate programs, alumni publications and other documents generated by various offices of the university are in the collection. These materials form a valuable history and record of the institution and aid scholars in doing research on its organization. Research of archival material is by appointment.

Archival Gallery

The Archival Gallery at Florida Memorial University has been established to give a terse account of university records and items that have been received and maintained throughout their life cycle. The exhibited materials in the Archival Gallery extend from when the University relocated to St. Augustine, FL in 1918 before relocating to Miami, FL in 1968 to present. The Archival gallery exhibits cultural, social and intellectual resources in the form of paintings, artifacts and other materials from the institution’s archives.

Benny Andrews

The Benny Andrews Art Exhibition highlights the work of renowned American Artist Benny Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a social realis artist and his works demonstrated realism. This exhibit displays two of his paintings, ”Reading the Will”(1999) from the Hickory Chair Series and “English Class B” (2005) from the Langston Hughes Series. The artworks were donated by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) on behalf of the Benny Andrews Foundation.

Career Collection

This collection provides information on career preparation, resume writing, cover letters and job interviewing. The collection is located in the Reference area on the second floor of the library. Most of the resources may be checked out. This collection supports all student disciplines and lends support to the university’s iRoar and Career Development programs.

Carl Crawford Collection

The Carl Crawford collection is a collection of African Art collected by Dr. Carl Crawford an educator and art collector. The collection has 42 African wooden sculptures and one painting. Dr. Crawford was an art teacher and administrator for Miami-Dade College and the Broward County school system. Dr. Crawford was a former Provost at Broward Community College.
This collection was donated to Nathan W. Collier Library from the Carl Crawford’s Estate. The wood sculptures are located on the first floor and in the University Archives on the second floor of the library.

Coco Plum Children’s Literature

Coco Plum Children’s Literature collection primarily houses children’s, juvenile and young adult books. This collect began as a gift received from the Coco Plum Women’s Club of Coral Gables Florida. A majority of the books in this collection are winners by the American Library Association’s Awarding of the Caldecott Medal, Newberry Medal and Coretta Scott King. Caldecott Medal award honors the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The Newberry medal honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children and Coretta Scott King award recognizes an African American Illustrator of outstanding books to children. This collection has approximately 2,500 print volumes. located on the second floor in connection to the Curriculum Materials Collection in support of the Education Program. This collection is mainly used by students majoring in the School of Education and is located on the second floor of the library.

Curriculum Materials

The Curriculum Materials Collection curriculum guides, textbooks, and other professional books in support of the Florida Teacher Education Program. Materials circulate for seven days. This collection is located on the second floor adjacent to the reference desk.

Florida Collection

The Florida Collection located on the north end of the first floor, is a circulating collection of books and materials about or related to the state of Florida. This collection house over 1,000 print volumes that can be checked out by any student in any discipline.

Laban C. Conner Black Collection

The Laban C. Conner Black Collection located on the second floor, contains books, pamphlets, and other materials written by or about Blacks and the Black experiences. Books in this collection are listed in the online catalog and are to be used in the library only. Requests for materials and access to this collection are made at the Reference Desk.

The Mickens Collection

The Reverend Isaac C. Mickens Theological, Pastoral and Sermonic Research Collection is designed of persons interested in research, study, and reading in religion and related subjects. Books in this collection may be checked out for a three-week period. This collection is located on the first floor of the library and often serves as a huge help to students in Religion and Theological studies.

Schomburg Collection

The Schomburg Collection is a collection of materials on microfilm from the Schomburg Collection of the New York Public Library. This microfilm collection consists of approximately 10,000 publications and miscellaneous items on the African American experience and culture. This collection is housed on the first floor of the library.
