About the Library

The University Library is located at the center of the Florida Memorial University campus. The Library is  an attractive two-story structure, with approximately 25,000 square feet of floor space with reading rooms on each level, and a seating capacity of over 500.  The collection includes over 115, 000 volumes, an audio-visual/media center, and over 700 subscriptions to journals and newspapers, in support of academic programs. The Library  subscribes to several web-based Full-Text Databases that provide access to thousands of scholarly journals and newspapers.  Internet access is also provided to several online indexes, abstracts and  scholarly resources.

The Library is fully automated  with terminals available for public use for access to the Internet and the Web,  and is equipped with a fully integrated technology system to support all library operations and technical services.   Online access to the library collection is available through the Millennium Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), which is the main component of the Library’s Integrated Library System, by Innovative Interfaces. The Florida Memorial University Library is also a participating JSTOR (Journal Storage) library. JSTOR provides access to back issues of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, over the Web.  Other electronic resources include OCLC-FirstSearch, Gale Student Resource Center, Gale Custom Newspapers, Ethnic Newswatch,  Current Contents Connect, Facts on File, Proquest Psychology Journals, PsycInfo Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, EbscoOnline, Wilson Web OmniFile Full-Text Mega-Edition, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Academic Abstracts Full-Text, and the Bloomberg Financial Markets Database.  Faculty, staff, and students are afforded remote access to the OPAC and to many of the online databases.

The Florida Memorial University institutional Archives is located on the second floor of the Library and is maintained by the Library faculty and staff.  The Library also maintains a Curriculum Materials Center to support teacher education, and several special collections, including:  The Laban C. Conner Black Collection, which contains materials written by or about Blacks and the Black experience; the Rev. Isaac C. Mickins Collection on Theological, Pastoral and Sermonic Research materials; and the Florida Memorial University, Florida Collection, which contains books and materials related to the  State of  Florida.

Nathan W. Collier Library is an Associate Member of the Southeast Florida Library Information Network (SEFLIN), OCLC, and  the  Association of Colleges & Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).  Through our SEFLIN membership, students, faculty and professional staff have library privileges with other member institutions. Interlibrary Loan  access and Courier Service are also available for materials not owned by the Florida Memorial University Library.

With a variety of print collections and a growing list of comprehensive online resources, the University Library is experiencing a vital stage of transformation.  We will continue to develop a quality balanced collection from the ever growing world of printed information, while maintaining a steady response to the technology of a rapidly changing world of networks, databases, and global internet access.
