Business Continuity Planning
What is a Business Continuity Plan?
A business continuity plan is a set of written procedures that insures there will be a minimum disruption to the normal flow of business as a result of discontinuance of any type of service on which a department relies. These procedures will also be used in conjunction with the Florida Memorial University Disaster Recovery Plan in the event of a computer disaster at the University.
What is required in a Business Continuity Plan?
Each business unit of the University must develop a document that contains the following information:
-
the identification, data entry and storage procedures of original source documents
-
the ability to retrieve these source documents and re-enter the data if the data in the computer system is no longer retrievable
- the procedures that will allow each unit to continue basic manual processes should services be lost for an extended period of time
The documented procedures should include:
- a business unit data flow diagram
- document retrieval procedures
- procedures for re-creation of data files in the event of a data processing disaster
- written manual operations within the business unit
Suggested methods of contingency plan development have been provided by IMT to each department. Also included are formats for the each of the appendices and unit processes that must be completed by each unit manager. A set of unit processes should be completed for each point of failure discussed in your department. A designated primary and secondary contact for each unit is also required.
