Scholarship Program
Florida Memorial University invests in the education of its students through its Scholarship Program. The University seeks, acknowledges, and rewards those students who demonstrate academic, musical, and athletic promise. As an institution of higher education, the University holds first and foremost to a standard of academic excellence. This standard and quest for excellence is integrate with the reality of the expense of a university education. When the University is the funding source, a need based award formula is applied as determined by the Office of Financial Aid. In its role as the repository for various Designated Scholarships, the University complies with donors’ award stipulations. In either role, the Scholarship Program at Florida Memorial University reflects the institution’s commitment to its students and the pursuit of academic and fiscal integrity.
Who Receives Scholarships?
First Term
Scholarship applicants must meet the minimum general scholarship criteria or the criteria indicated in the specific scholarship or its category, and demonstrate a certifiable financial need (if an institutional funded scholarship). The following minimum criteria must be met. To be considered applicants must:
-formally apply for a scholarship
-have a minimum high school un-weighted grade point average of 3.3 and a SAT score of at least 900 or an ACT score of at least 21 for Academic Scholarships
-have a minimum cumulative un-weighted grade point of 2.2 (including high schools, if entering freshmen) and a SAT sore of at least 880 or an ACT score of 17 for Athletic, Incentive, and Cultural Scholarships.
-be fully admitted and enrolled as a full time student (a minimum of 12 credit hours) for the duration of the scholarship period.
Returning Students
The University’s scholarship opportunities are associated with the Financial Aid process. Students must complete annually a financial aid package, as need must be reestablished each academic year. In conjunction with the financial criterion of need, other criteria are applied to the scholarship renewal process. Renewal of any institutional scholarship is not automatic. To be considered for renewal students must:
-initiate the renewal process by informing the appropriate scholarship area director
-be fully admitted, enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours, and have passed a minimum of 24 credit hours the previous academic year
-have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.3 for Academic Scholarship recipients, and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.2 for Athletic, Incentive and Cultural Scholarship recipients.
-be recommended to the Scholarship Coordinator by the appropriate Faculty or Staff scholarship coordinator in the various Scholarship categories within two (2) weeks after Spring Semester grades are due in the Office of the Registrar
-display moral turpitude (i.e., there must be neither disciplinary action taken nor pending student conduct nor judicial issues)
Campus Scholarships
Scholarships at Florida Memorial University are awarded to assist students in meeting their financial obligation to the University. Students may receive scholarships based on a specific major, classification, geographical location, academic achievement and other qualifications, which the scholarship donors may stipulate. Scholarships are categorized in the following manners, Restricted, Unrestricted or Flexible Programs. Information on the various scholarships awarded at the University can be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid or the Director of Enrollment Management.
The Scholarship Program consists of five award categories: Academic, Athletic, Incentive, Cultural, and Designated (Donor). Each is summarized below, in addition to general information, definitions of relevant terms and criteria for each scholarship category follow:
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS recognize and reward students of exceptional academic promise and achievement.
-Entering freshmen or transfer with an un-weighted GPA of 3.3 to 3.49 and SAT test score of at least 900 or ACT score of at least 21 can receive up to $2,000.00 per year
-Entering freshmen or transfer with an un-weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher and SAT test score of at least 1000 or ACT score of at least 22 can receive up to the annual tuition cost per year
-Entering freshmen with a minimum SAT test score of 1000 or a minimum composite score of 21 on the ACT enhance version can receive up to$2,000.00 per year.
ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS recognize and reward students with special talents in Basketball, Baseball, Track/Field, and Volleyball
-Eligible participants awards are based on each individual financial aid eligibility. Amounts cannot exceed the Direct Cost to attend the University and NAIA stipulations.
INCENTIVE SCHOLARSHIPS recognize and reward students involved with the S.G.A., Student Newspaper and Yearbook, COMPACT, and Institutional Work study.
-Awards are based on contractual or budgeting arrangements as stipulated by the institution.
CULTURAL SCHOLARSHIPS recognize and reward students with special talents in music (Vocal and Instrumental) and Drama.
Eligible participants involved with the Ambassador Chorale can receive up to $1,000.00 per year.
-Eligible participants involved with the Band can be award up to the annual tuition cost per year (books included) after all financial aid funds are awarded.
DESIGNATED SCHOLARSHIPS are externally funded and vary in eligibility (e.g., individual, academic, geographic) stipulations.
-The University Respects and adheres to whatever condition are established by the donor. The institution does not affect the monetary award of designated scholarships.
Scholarship Provisions
MONETARY STIPULATIONS
Institutional Awards –the provisions of the institutional scholarship are limited to the direct cost of attending the University, that is, tuition, fees, room and board, and books. If other financial assistance when combined with the institutional scholarship award exceeds the direct cost, the institutional scholarship will be reduced accordingly.
DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS
All scholarships are limited in duration to eight (8) semesters per recipient. This stipulation assumes all eligibility/ renewal criteria have been met. No scholarship is available for students during summer term. Awards are for the Fall and /or Spring Semesters only.
Students who maintain satisfactory progress and demonstrate financial need (as appropriate) are eligible for a renewal consideration, subject to reapplying for assistance and not exceeding the eighth (8) semester limit.
DUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
No student may receive two institutional scholarship awards, unless authorized by the Scholarship Coordinator.
