“Enhancing Academic Excellence With A Vision For The Twenty First Century”

Florida Memorial University, South Florida’s only historically black institution of higher learning, has been reaching out to its surrounding communities to address critical urban needs. Florida Memorial has joined the battle to help develop and prepare youth for the Twenty First Century. With several Pre-College academic enhancement, intervention and prevention programs, the Lion’s Pre-College Experience Institute is helping over nine hundred (900) youth through-out South Florida believe and make their dreams a reality.

During the 2006-2007 year, the Lion’s Pre-College Experience Institute will host nine (9) programs that enable and provide over 950 youth with the opportunity to experience a college environment while participating in various developmental programs. The various programs focus on academic achievement and higher learning, with emphasis on physical fitness, dropout prevention, religion, financial management & entrepreneurship, aerospace engineering, and personal development. These programs are making a great impact on participating youth.

A brief synopsis of each program and contact information follows:

Baptist Camp – Two Week Residential Program that focuses on personal development in the area of self-esteem, personal hygiene, and religion for male and females ages 8 – 17. Program dates 1 Jul-7 Jul and 8 Jul-14 Jul. Enrollment is restricted. Primary goal is to provide youth with a Christian wholesome environment and experience. Baptist Camp enrolls over two hundred (200) participants from Florida. Participants participate in rap sessions, Christian education and Bible classes, swimming, talent shows, arts and crafts, and prayer services.

Black Male College Explorers Program (BMCEP): Five-Week Residential Program designed for black males in grades 7 – 12 in the Public School System. Program dates 17 Jun-20 Jul. Registration closed for new enrollment. Program objectives are to increase the number of black males graduating from high school; facilitate their ability to make appropriate career decisions; and increase the number of college bound black males and their chances of earning a college degree. BMCEP enrolls sixty (60) youth from over 25 schools throughout South Florida. Participants enroll in courses such as Reading/English, African History, Computers, Mathematics, Personal Development/Life Skills, Communication Skills, and Financial Management & Entrepreneurship. Participants attend and participate in Rites of Passage Program teen summits (group discussions), community service projects, workshops, sports competitions, and weekly church visits as well as other educational and extra-curricular activities.

College Reach Out Program (CROP): A one-week summer residential program focusing on higher education, held in collaboration with the Black Male College Explorers Program. This summer only current enrolled males are eligible for the summer residency component of the program. Program dates: Sunday, June 15th through Saturday, June 21st 2008. CROP is a year-round tutorial, mentoring, counseling and college preparatory program that currently enrolls over three hundred (300) students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Operating as the North Dade County Consortium, partners include Florida Memorial University, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The primary objective of the program is to increase the number of low-income educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6-12 who, upon high school graduation, are admitted to and successfully complete postsecondary education. Cultural & Academic Enrichment Summer Camp – The Cultural and Academic Enrichment Summer Camp at Florida Memorial University is designed to improve academic and cultural competencies among under-achieving students in Miami-Dade County. The 8-week summer camp will consist of academic i instruction in math, language arts, and science; experiential and exploratory learning; physical fitness; and personal, family and life skills development.

Summer camp participants will be grouped in age-specific groups of 20, with three mentor/counselors and one instructor for each class. Each group will have a fixed schedule where they attend classes in math, science, language arts and health and physical education each day, Monday thru Thursday, and weekly classes in cultural awareness, music, drama, and life skills. Fridays are reserved for experiential learning and field trips.

Florida Memorial All Star Band Camp – Florida Memorial University’s All Star Band Camp is a joint undertaking by the music staff at Florida Memorial University and the band staff at Miami Carol City Senior High School. The camp will run from June 4-June 10. It will offer marching band, concert band, jazz band, solo, and ensemble for instrumentalists. Training for dancers, majorettes, and flag teams will also be a major component of the camp.

National Baptist Convention Southeast Region Youth Camp – The National Baptist Convention Southeast Region Youth Conference is July 26, 27, 28, 2007. There will be age appropriate classes for children, teens, and college age youth from ages 6-21. Training classes are also offered for youth workers. Daily activities include: Bible studies, discussion groups, forums mission outreach, music, talent exhibitions, oratorical contest and recreation. Enrollment comes from member churches of the National Baptist Convention, but others will be considered if they are willing to abide by the conduct and dress standards prescribed by the sponsors. National Black MBA Association – Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) 2007 Leadership Camp – 5-8 day international summer camp program to London, United Kingdom, focusing on Leadership Skills, Career & Personal Development and Team Building. Tentative dates July 21 – 29, 2007 or July 28 – August 5, 2007. 10-12 students who are active participants of their local chapter will be selected to attend the camp. The camp will include at least two recreational activities (field trips or other learning activities). For more than a decade, the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Program of the NBMBAA has had a stimulating influence on high school students with a grade point average between C- and C+. These students have exhibited leadership potential, but require additional motivators and factors in their lives to realize their full potential. The NBMBAA South Florida Chapter LOT Program continues to offer its members participation in annual Conference Essay Scholarships and Case Competitions.

National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) – Five Week Day Program geared at Sports Instruction and Academic Enrichment for ages 10 – 16 will not be hosted this summer due to funding.

South Florida Youth Orchestra Summer Camp (June 11-15) – Provides an opportunity for young musicians (Grades 6-12) a chance to study strings, woodwind, and brass techniques for an intensive one week program. Students also attend classes in music theory, composition, and piano. The one week session concludes with a concert of music played by the students. Guest instructors will include Nicole Yarling, Leo Walz, and Richard Yaklich.
