Academic Advising

Academic advisement in the Department of Freshman Studies is mandatory for students who have not decided upon a major and/or must complete pre-college level courses in English, reading, and mathematics offered by the Division. Upon successful completion of course requirement(s), students are referred to a degree-granting division for academic advisement. Students who are not required to take pre-college level courses must go directly to degree-granting divisions for academic advisement.

The academic advising program is designed to provide students with guidelines necessary to progress through college-level credit courses and chart appropriate initial courses of study. The advising process begins with new student orientation and continues throughout the students’ tenure in the Department of Freshman Studies. Components of the advising process are the college catalog, course plans and checksheets, and the assigned advisor. Academic advisors assist students in selecting courses appropriate for their level and sequence of study. Students should confer with advisors regularly.

However, advising errors do not exempt students from the responsibility of meeting all degree requirements for graduation.
