Launch your career in aviation with a degree from Florida MemorialUniversity’s Department of Aviation & Safety.

Future in the Aerospace Industry
The Department offers rigorous programs designed to educate the future administrators and technical managers of the aerospace industry. The curriculum stresses quantitative reasoning, human factors, human resources management, written and oral communications, computer literacy, and aeronautics. In addition, aviation programs incorporate problem recognition and solving, critical thinking, and decision-making to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Individuals with an aviation education will have a broad perspective of the aerospace industry, the environments in which it operates, and its impact on global transportation and economics.

Simulators & Aviation Library
The Department of Aviation & Safety serves as the focal point of technological education at Florida Memorial University. Academic and flight instruction is supported by a fleet of simulators and a well-stocked aviation resource library.  Spread your wings and take flight in any of three program areas:

Aeronautical Science

A classical education in powered flight. Successful completion of the program means you will be FAA certified for an entry-level position as a commercial pilot or flight instructor.

Airway Science

This program emphasizes the administration and management of aviation-related operations and businesses.

A Career in Flight
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects significant and continuing growth in the aerospace industry through 2016. Your bachelor of science degree can lead to positions, such as:

• Aeronautical engineer

• Air traffic controller

• Airline pilot

• Aviation inspector

• Avionics technician

• Operations administrator/manager

• Radio operator

Facilities
The William Lehman Aviation Center, a highly modern training facility with laboratory classrooms and flight simulators, is just a walk across campus, and adjacent to the Opa-Locka Airport.

Florida Memorial Student Flies Solo Around the World!
At 16, Barrington Irving, Jr. was working in his Jamaican-born parents’ inner-city Miami bookstore when he met United Airlines Captain Gary Robinson. By age 19, and with Robinson’s mentorship, Barrington obtained his first pilot's license, and began inspiring young people in his community toward aviation.

As an aerospace major at Florida Memorial University, with just 600 hours of certified flight time, Barrington promised himself he would become the youngest—and the first of African descent—to fly solo around the world. In 2005, he established the non-profit Experience Aviation Learning Center to highlight his efforts and address the significant shortage of youth pursuing careers in aviation and aerospace.

On June 27, 2007, after 130 hours in flight, 95 days, 26,800 miles, and landings in countries such as the Azores, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Egypt, Dubai, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, China, Japan, and Russia, Barrington made good on his promise.

Upon returning to Florida Memorial to complete his studies, Barrington said, “It doesn't matter where you are coming from, what you have, what you don’t have. My slogan is ‘Dream, live, fly’—and that is what I wanted to prove.”
