Dr. John M. Berry

John Marvin Berry was born and raised in Brooklyn, John holds a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies in Philanthropy and Leadership Management in Higher Education earned from the Union Institute and University.  His Master’s and Bachelor’s in Social Work in Administration, Policy and Organization, from Southern University at New Orleans School Work, John also earned an Associate in Applied Science degree from the State University of New York at Farmingdale A &T.  He also holds a Certification in Fund Raising Management (CFRM) and has completed extensive coursework at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University’s Fund Raising School. John has held administrative fundraising positions at Winston-Salem State University, Lincoln University in Missouri, South Carolina State University, and West Virginia State University.  John has held the following Fellowships American Council on Education Advancing to the Presidency Institute, American Association of State Colleges and Universities Millennium Leadership Initiative, Harvard’s Institutes for Higher Education Management and Leadership Education (MLE), Vanderbilt University Peabody College Summer Institute for Institutional Advancement Fellows. John is a former Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Clarence J. Jupiter Fellow; a Ruth Lilly Indiana University Center on Philanthropy Archive Fellow; and a Gilder Lehman Institute of American History Fellow at Columbia University. His articles on fundraising for smaller colleges and universities and have run in Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Currents (publication of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), and Black Issues in Higher Education.   John was selected to serve on the review committee for The Center on Philanthropy; The School of Fund Raising at Indiana University. John has worked on capital campaigns that have raised millions of philanthropic dollars for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
