FINANCIAL AID! WHAT'S THAT?

Financial aid is money in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study and loans awarded to assist students who otherwise would not be able to afford the cost of attending college.

The Office of Financial Aid is located on the main campus, in the Student Service Center. Its primary objective is to ensure that funds are available to eligible students so they may have access to a Florida Memorial University education.

Although the family (parents and student) is considered to have the primary responsibility for meeting the cost of attendance, we recognize most families need assistance. The amount of help needed is determined by calculating the family's ability to pay. This amount, called the estimated family contribution and other outside funds, which may be available to the student, is subtracted from the allowable cost of attendance. The resulting difference is called demonstrated financial need.

To avoid over burdening the student with increased borrowing or an overwhelming number of hours of employment, we normally combine various forms of financial aid to meet the student’s financial need. Gift aid (scholarships or grants) usually serves this very purpose and is often included in the package, especially when there is a high demonstrated financial need. Students are encouraged to apply early for financial aid as well as admission to the University, which better their chances at receiving Gift aid.

At Florida Memorial University, Financial Aid is awarded to students primarily based on need. Following the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the student's need is determined. The FAFSA is available from high school counselors, the University's Financial Aid Office or the government web site at www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is recommended that the students and/or parents' tax return be used when completing the FAFSA.

For priority consideration, all eligible students are required to apply for the various Federal and State programs by completing the FAFSA no later than March 13. Each student must also complete an institutional application providing the Office of Financial Aid with additional data required prior to the creation of his/her financial aid file.

Campus-Based Aid
The University Work Study Program (CWSP) and Supplementary Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are considered Campus-Based Aid. The Financial Aid Office, according to students' needs, distributes those funds. Preference is given to eligible students with exceptional financial need. Depending upon government funding levels, funds are distributed to assist students in meeting direct costs (room, board, tuition and fees for resident students, tuition and fees for off-campus students). Indirect costs, such as transportation, living expenses and books, usually are the responsibility of the individual student.

Students are responsible for the completion of the appropriate forms for grants, loans and scholarships. Assistance can be obtained at the Financial Aid Office. Students could also refer to the Florida Memorial University Consumer Bulletin for Financial Aid for detailed instructions on how to apply for financial aid.

New students entering Florida Memorial University for the 2007 Fall Semester can take the first step in applying for financial aid now by obtaining a federal student PIN (and a parent PIN if parental financial information will be provided) at www.pin.ed.gov. The PIN(s) will be used in filing the 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. We recommend submitting the FAFSA online by March 31 to ensure consideration for all financial aid programs.

In order to receive financial aid, a student must be enrolled, in good standing, and making satisfactory progress toward a degree.
