Founded in 1879, Florida Memorial University, an Historically Black University related to the Baptist Church and its traditions, is one of the oldest academic centers in Florida. It was in Jacksonville that faculty member J. Rosamond Johnson and his brother James Weldon Johnson co-wrote "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing.” In 1963, the name was changed to Florida Memorial College, and in 1968, the University moved to Miami, Florida, where it remains today. The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelors and Masters degrees. The college is also chartered by the state of Florida.

Mission Statement
The Center for Urban Environmental Studies provides educational and research opportunities to faculty and students and outreach to communities on environmental issues with emphasis on South Florida. The Center is run under the Directorship of William E. Hopper PhD and offers degree programs Majoring in Environmental Studies and Minors in Ecology and Environmental Studies.

Opportunities
Opportunities for Environmental Studies graduates are found in Environmental consulting firms, departments in local, state or federal agencies, Environmental compliance and problem solving industries. Other areas include environmental laboratory testing, nature education centers, natural resource management, not-profit environmental advocacy groups and the U.S. Peace Corps.
