Florida Memorial Ousted in Second Tound

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — Marques Benjamin came off of Mayville State’s bench to score 13 points and Scott Theis grabbed 11 rebounds in a reserve role as the Comets ousted Florida Memorial 88-72 in second-action of the NAIA D-II National Tournament.

Mayville State’s subs outscored their counterparts from Florida Memorial by an 18-7 count. The Comets trailed by seven points early in the first half, but gradually gained the lead and pulled away as guard Ron Howard netted a game-high 28 points. Howard was 9-for-11 at the free-throw line.

Forward Monty Rogers added 21 points on 9-of-14 field-goal shooting. Florida Memorial had 16 offensive rebounds, but converted them into only 13 second-chance points. Tramaine Stevens topped the Lions with 24 points, but was only 8-of-23 shooting.

Florida Memorial, which upset No. 4 seed Huntington in the first round, managed just 39 percent success from the field (26-of-67) and committed 18 turnovers.
