Duo leads Florida Memorial past SCAD men 72-67

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The duo of Daniel Garcia and Andre Beauford combined for 40 points as Florida Memorial University held off the Savannah College of Art and Design men’s basketball team 72-67 in a Florida Sun Conference contest Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon at the Ron Love Athletic Center.
The Lions improved to 7-12 overall and to 4-4 in the conference while the Bees dropped their third consecutive game and fell to 10-16 and 2-6. SCAD will try and get back in the win column Wednesday (Feb. 7) as they face No. 16 Warner Southern College in a 7 p.m. FSC contest at Savannah High School.
After the teams battled to a 34-34 tie at the half, Florida Memorial took the lead for good at 42-40 on two free throws with 15:18 remaining by Tramaine Stevens, who finished with 15 points. That started a string of seven consecutive points by the Lions that saw them take a 47-40 advantage on a layup by Daniel Garcia with 12:08 to play. Garcia finished with a game-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.
SCAD would get as close as two points on five different occasions, the last coming at 63-61 on an short jumper by Eze Andrews with 2:51 left. However, Beauford, who scored 17 points, scored a layup 28 seconds later to put the Lions up by four. The Lions were able to hold off the Bees as they converted 7-of-10 attempts from the free throw line in the final 53 seconds.
Nick Maloy led all SCAD scorers with 16 points while Gerard Bowden added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Eze Andrews recorded his 12th double double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Tim Stammen tallied 10 points.
