In November 2014, the Department of Aviation & Safety agreed to conduct a six month Aviation Career Education program for the Piney Grove Boys Academy from Broward County. The young men were exposed to a myriad of aviation careers, aviation history, professionalism, etiquette, and flight simulations; all culminating to an orientation flight in the FMU Flying Lions Cessna 172 at Opa Locka Airport.
During June 2014, the Department of Aviation & Safety, in conjunction with the South Florida Aviators Fly-in and Education Expo (SAFEE), hosted a 5 day summer Aviation Career Education program with 20 students from local middle and high schools.
Aviation students participated in the 2015 United Way Tug-A-Plane for charity. The object of the competition was to see which team could pull an empty B757 approximately 50 years the fastest. It was not as heavy as they thought!
