Freshman Studies

The Department of Freshman Studies assists first year and transfer students in their transition toward academic success at Florida Memorial University. It is the point of entry for all first year and transfer students who have not declared a major. Freshman Studies houses pre-college courses for students who might need to improve academic skills. The Department of Freshman Studies also provides academic support to students through: (1) the Center for Advising and Retention, (2) the Academic Resource Centers (3) Community Outreach and Retention (4) Testing and (5) FMU 101 – Freshman Orientation. First year students and students with less than 15 transfer credits are advised in the Freshman Studies Department. Upper classmen are advised in their respective departments.

Freshman Studies:

  • Provides orientation to new students
  • Advises freshmen and undeclared sophomores
  • Serves as the Testing Center
  • Offers FMU 101, a college transition and success seminar
  • Monitors the progress of students
  • Conducts community outreach
  • Implements strategies for retention of students
  • Reports to the Office of Academic Affairs
