The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) prepares the student for a career in computer information systems and information technology. The CIS degree focuses on the utilization of the computer, information technology and methodologies as tools to solve business problems, to give an organization a strategic advantage in business operation. Its objective is to ensure that students have a solid foundation in computer information sciences, technical proficiency, and essential business skills to successfully perform in various information technology environments. The program also emphasizes development of Web/Internet-based business information systems such as e-commerce.

The CIS program consists of technical courses such as programming languages, data structures, database systems, networking and data communications, and information systems organization with emphasis on the business environment. CIS students will have both a business and technical foundation that will enable them to pursue either a business career or a technical career with an understanding of how technology facilitates business objectives and how business objectives need computer information systems to achieve their goals.

The CIS major prepares students for possible careers as technical support specialist, computer operator, database administrator, database programmer, system analyst and design, software engineer, web application developer, network administrator, network security specialist, i nformation systems specialist, and multimedia specialist.

The CIS major and its curriculum aim to provide expertise in the Information Sciences Body of knowledge as specified by the ACM and IEEE Computer Society Joint Task Force on Information Sciences Curricula.

Program Educational Objectives

The main objective of the BS in Computer Information Systems program is to produce graduates who will have the following:

  1. The acquisition of quantitative, analytical, problem-solving, and modern business, programming, and technology skills needed to perform effectively in a business environment as an information scientist as well as a graduate student.
  2. The interpersonal skills essential for productive teamwork and effective written, oral, and graphical communication skills in public settings.
  3. The professional and social responsibilities and knowledge of ethical values of modern local and global information technology.

 Program Outcomes

Each computer information systems graduate will demonstrate the following:

  1. An ability to apply theoretical concepts, analyze and resolve problems, and write computer programming software to system analysis and design, computer networking, database management systems, and related information systems fields utilized in the business environment.
  2. An ability to work cooperatively on team projects as well as the ability to compose written documents and make oral presentations using application software in the public setting.
  3. A global contemporary knowledge, such as humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences along with an understanding of the ethical and social issues in information sciences.

Graduation Requirements

This degree program requires a minimum of 120 semester hours for completion.
